Debbicot Press – Logo Redesign

    Logo Design

    About This Project

I had the pleasure of working alongside Carl Adamson designing a range of business book covers for Debbicot Press publishing business. His previous logo was a good starting point, but I felt the logo lacked personality and didn't truly reflect the character or story behind the publishing business. It also featured a traditional book symbol, something commonly seen in publishing logos, and I felt there was an opportunity to create something much more distinctive and personal.

After chatting with Carl and learning more about the business, its background and some of the wonderful stories behind it, one particular story caught my attention: a mischievous leprechaun stealing a cabbage! This had a special meaning and connection to Debbicot Press, making it the perfect inspiration for a logo that would be unique to his business rather than simply representing the publishing industry.

The design journey began with research and pencil sketches. Looking at traditional characteristics of leprechauns, their clothing, hats, facial features and expressions to identify the strongest elements that would make the character instantly recognisable. I wanted to simplify these details so the illustration would work effectively as a logo, without becoming overly complicated or losing its personality. Capturing the leprechaun’s cheeky, mischievous expression was important whilst making him look as though he was running off with his stolen cabbage! Through initial sketches, I refined his movement, posture and facial features to create a character full of personality while keeping the design simple and distinctive.

I also revisited the original branding colours, making subtle adjustments to create a more complementary palette that suited both the leprechaun character and the publishing business. Typography was another important consideration, with carefully selected contrasting font styles working together to give the logo a modern yet established feel.

Through several stages of refinement, from the initial pencil sketches to the final digital illustration, the logo gradually came to life. Every adjustment helped strengthen the character, improve the overall balance and bring all the elements together into one cohesive design.

The finished result is a distinctive, playful yet professional logo that tells a story and gives Debbicot Press its own recognisable identity.

What made the project especially rewarding was Carl's reaction to the finished design. In his own words, it felt as though it had always been their business logo.

For me, that's what makes thoughtful logo design so rewarding. It's not simply about creating something that looks good, but taking the time to understand the business, uncover its story and turn that into a visual identity that feels completely its own.
