Paying For The Party – Mark Whiteley

    Book Cover Design

    About This Project

Collaborating with The Book Chief Publishing House, I was commissioned to design the front cover for Paying for the Party by Mark Whiteley.

Mark had a very clear vision for the direction of the cover, with a black background forming the foundation. He wanted a bold, stripped-back design using strong white typography, supported by carefully chosen symbolic elements. The heartbeat line was a key feature, and I created a bespoke syringe illustration to integrate seamlessly into the title, reinforcing the subject matter in a subtle but impactful way.

Paying for the Party is a brutally honest addiction memoir from Mark Whiteley – bass player and founding member of the 80s indie band The Folk Devils. It charts a long and chaotic journey through heroin addiction, alcohol dependency, cancer, grief, relapse and ultimately recovery. At its core, this isn’t just a book about addiction. It’s about resilience. About falling apart and continuing anyway. About searching for meaning in the most difficult moments, and finding small glimpses of light along the way.

It was a pleasure to design this for Mark, creating something that resonated strongly with him. Released in Spring 2026, the cover provides a strong and fitting visual identity for his story. The final design is modern, bold and intentionally dark, supporting the tone of the book while standing out clearly to its audience and maybe spark some intrigue to his story.
